Sorry for juming into your msg Bill, didn't see the original post....
The fulminates, especially the silver and
mercury compounds are far too sensitive. AFAIK, the material in 'bang-snaps' is not
fulminate; it neither looks like fulminate (at least the ones I have examined don't
appear to contain fulminate) nor IMO has the degree of sensitivity exhibited by
fulminates. What it appears to me to be I'll keep to myself to discourage people from
experimenting. This is not to say that some of them don't contain fulminate, just that
those with which I am familiar do not appear to contain same. If someone who
manufactures such things (commercially) would care to comment on this, I'd like to know
Reubsnoobs would like to inform his inferiors by stating: Bangy thingummys DO contain silver you-know-what, a whole (approx) 10 MICROgrams of it. the rest is a fine gravel

You know about the beans from Mexico!!! A long time ago I got some garbanzo beans with a small layer of something on them and wrapped in a thin layer of foil. When I tossed them at the ground they bounced and left a beautiful trail of sparks. Been wanting to find out to make them for ages.

I've read in here that Silver Fulminate is the stuff used in those
little "bang-snaps" that kids get on the 4th that go off with a bit of
pressure. I've looked in numerous chemical supply catalogs, and
haven't seen any. Even pyro suppliers don't sell the stuff, so I'm
guessing it has to be made. So - how does one make it?
And, more importantly, can it be made safely? Obviously the stuff is
unstable, cause it goes off with pressure, but just how nasty is it?
Oh, and does it have any other pyro uses other than bang snaps?

I know this post is old but do not use this stuff. I snapped a Snap n Pop in my fingers over 40 years ago and still have scar tissues and intense itching, not to mention it blow half my fingerprint off. Pretty traumatic for a seven year old child.

Weingart says to use a silver dollar to make it.I would use a silver dime back in the 60's. I once had some go off under acetone. It's fast enough that the acetone din't catch fire. That was the last time I made it.It's very impressive stuff.Lead azide is much safer and cheaper.
